Advantages of a built-in h5p plugin

Hi everyone,

We are considering using either H5P.com for Canvas or Moodle with its built-in H5P plugin.

In your opinion, if we put aside the cost matter, what do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages of having a built-in h5p plugin for an LMS, such as for Moodle, over using h5p.com with LTI?

Hi Mao,

The only advantage of self-hosting over H5P.com might be that you have more personal control as things are maintained yourself.

The drawbacks would be:

  • You have to facilitate all upgrades, backups, etc. yourself.

  • You won’t get access to upcoming Premium Features.

There are many additional benefits of H5P.com vs. that of self-hosting:

6. Backups, upgrades, etc. handled by the H5P Core Team.

10. CSS styling via the admin interface.

There are also brand new premium features which are soon to be released exclusively for H5P.com as well. :)

There is a "Multiplayer" content type that is soon to be released. It is already in the final phase of testing.

The multiplayer content type will be an H5P.com exclusive content type.

Thank you -BV. Btw, about the dialog cards on H5P.com, I set the repetition mode, but when I finished the second round and logged out and then came back, it would not proceed to round three but started over again from round 1. Will this happen when it is integrated into Canvas via LTIs?

Hi Mao,

A resume feature is planned but the H5P.com developement team has not started with it. This feature should let you "resume" where you left off for most content types.

My organisation signed up with H5P.com but I'm struggling to see how I can adapt the CSS there. you mention in point 10. CSS styling via the admin interface, how do I access this to add brand colours etc. to the CSS? Any input appreciated.

Hi Bryan,

Colors, font, and also the size of the boxes can be customized using Custom CSS features. However, since changing of the CSS can sometimes disrupt layout, these feature is OFF by default. We warn administrators of such potential outcomes before we turn this option ON (upon request).

You can send an email to [email protected] to request the enabling of the CSS feature.
