Closed captioning?

Hello

I have a requirement to provide video with closed captioning.  The software I used to record (Camtasia 2 Mac) allows me to add said captioning and export it all as a package I can upload to my site.  Right now, they watch the video then use a H5P question set to review.  Is there a way to combine the video with CC and use interactive video?

Hello! There is a pull request for supporting the srt standard for subtitles/closed captions, but it haven't been reviewed yet. Right now there is no support for this but it is obviously something that will be added.

Hi folks,

Has there been any development with subtitles/closed captions?

Thanks

If you go to your account and create a new Interactive Video, you may have a sneak peek at what's about to be released: Adding closed captions/subtitles is possible either by using content from YouTube or by uploading captions in .vtt-format.

hi! I started creating an interactive video but haven't done anything yet because I'm stuck with subtitles. I downloaded a vtt file from this site https://amara.org/en/videos/o42BCwkrIsTI/es/16199/492316/ but nothing happens when I upload the file into the h5p content created. Also, I'm not a programmer so I'm just following the internet community on this jaja

I hope you can help me fin the issue here since I've got to create a lot of content :(

Please note that the uploaded subtitles don't work if you use a YouTube URL. You'll have to add the subtitle track to your YouTube video and not the interactive video.

Also, you have to start playing the video for the subtitle selector button to appear.

Cool, thanks!! So the solution would be to upload the video (under 16Mb) and add the track file in order to view subtitles, right?

Yes, or you could upload it to YouTube, but then you need to add the subtitle track to YouTube and not inside the Interactive Video tool.

Hi I am very excited for this feature and understand the difference between and uploaded video and uploaded vtt file vs YouTube and doing the captioning on YouTube. However, I have a YouTube video that has CC on it and when I load it on YouTube but not caption options or buttons show up when I add that video to an IV. Are there some guidelines or updated tutorials that are available for this new function?

Thank you very much.

icc's picture

That's strange. Make sure you're using the latest version of Interactive Video. Also, you could try opening a fresh browser or incognito mode as the subtitles may be disabled for the logged in account.

Here's a test video where you should be able to select subtitles: h5p.org/node/90379

I love the feature to add captions to Interactive Videos - H5P rocks!
In your example the subtitles are turned Off by default - how do I set that up? In my videos, the subtitles are On by default, and I can't see where to change that.

BV52's picture

Hi philippelmer,

If you are adding the video in H5P it is automatically set to "On". As far as I know there is no option to change that setting.

-BV52

I've found that if you are just using the auto captions on Youtube they don't show up all of the time but seems to work on the few that I've done when you edit the captions and save a new one.

BV52's picture

Hi mknippling,

The auto-generated captions from Youtube does not get served through their API that H5P uses. It is however possible to use Youtube's captions by manually creating one.

Hi,

I have an mp4 video which I have embedded into a presentation. I have uploaded a .VTT file but the closed captions aren't showing up. What am I doing wrong.

Thanks

Hi Leticia,

So that we can check the settings and your file would you mind sharing a link to your content (download enabled) and attach the VTT file please change the file extension to .txt so that you can upload it here

-BV

Thanks for the quick reply. It was the way I had created my VTT file.

Brilliant thanks for coming back to me so quickly. Will take a look now.

Julie

Great stuff. Is this only available for video? Any option for cc on audio?

Thanks

Julie

Presently, it's only available for interactive video as far as I know.

Super excited this has been added!

However, I can't figure out how to upload the file.  I believe I have updated my library (it's showing 1.8.2)

icc's picture

Under 'Video files' there should be a section named 'Text tracks (subtitles, captions and descriptions)'.

You can see how it should look if you try to create content here on h5p.org.

It's great Closed Caption capability has been added to the Interactive Video activity.

I have created a test on H5P, downloaded and uploaded by my site, updated /  upgraded the existing activities and rebuilt the cache. This allows me to create Interative Videos with captions.

However I only tend to use Interactive Videos within 'course presentation' activity and I notice it's not using the same library as the stand-alone Interactive video activity. When will course presentation get updated so Interactive videos within presentaions can take advantage of captions? Is there a way for me to do this myself? i.e. swap out the library in 'course presentation' for interactive video so it uses this recent update?

The only solution for me would be to pull appart my course presentation and having seperate Interactive video activities, then a course presnetaion, then a video, etc. meaning I'd have multiple activies, when I previously only required a single activity.

Thanks

Hi,

It sounds like the IV inside your CP is just using an old version of IV. You should be to run the update script from the libraries page, to get the embedded IV up to date too.

Hi,

I have updated all the libraries using the update script already, which was successful on 2 systems (Wordpress & Moodle). It would appear to me that a different version is being used for IV inside Course Presentation.  So, this suggested solution does not work; any ideas?

Captions for IV inside CP is also not being used within the H5P site when creating a new Course Presentation -> add Interactive Video, no caption options.

Many Thanks for any further suggestions, could you possibly check if you can create captions in a CP for IV please?

tomaj's picture

Hi,

I looked into it, and it looks like the current version if CP is still using an older version of IV. This will be fixed with the next release of CP.

Hi Tom,

As I thought, the CP activity is using old libraries - at least I know I'm not going mad :-)

Do you have any ETA date for the next release? I'm currently working on a course and need to if I can deliver within the time-frame that's been set.

I could of course pull-apart the CP and make a number of activities instead, but I'd really rather not as it's duplicating a lot of work.

Thanks

Hi Stopbit,

Since the H5P Hub came, we can release Content Types much more often and independently of each other. So there is not date for CP, just when it's ready for release. I don't know when that will be.

I tested a Course Presentation with a video (not interactive!) and added a VTT-file to that and noticed some issues:

  • Firefox displays the Captions, but german umlauts (the dots) are truncated because of the line height.
  • Captions can't be turned off in Firefox as the button is missing completely
  • Chrome doesn't display any captions at all :-(

Are these things already known/addressed?

Appendix: iOS shows no captions, too.

Hi pheraph,

I am unable to reproduce this issue. In order give your bug report the best chance of getting answered, please include the following information:

  1. Steps to recreate the bug
  2. Platform you're using: Drupal, Wordpress, Moodle (version number would be helpful as well)
  3. Mobile or Desktop
  4. Browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc
  5. H5P plugin version
  6. H5P content type version
  7. Screenshots if it's a visual problem

The more information you provide, the quicker the community will be able to fix it and the quicker you'll have a working solution!

Thanks for your information request. In the meantime I figured out the missing subtitle switch happened, because I didn't set the text track to "subtitle". Setting it to the subtitle-type the switch is displayed correctly.

Still a problem are german umlauts, because the dots leave the black background, which renders them unrecognizable on white videos (see attached GIF for clarification) in Firefox 55 on macOS 10.12.6 (Chrome and Safari work fine). I also added a minimal h5p example (I tried to import it back here, but got an error?).

These are the requested version numbers:

  • Wordpress v4.8.1
  • h5p v1.8.4
  • Course Presentation v1.16.0

Hi pheraph,

It's good to hear that you where able to figure out the "missing switch" issue.

Thank you for providing the information. Both of us are unable to upload the sample H5P because VTT files are not yet included in the white list. Don't worry though I was able to reproduce the issue and filed a bug report, you can follow it here.

pheraph's picture

Hi,

thanks for the ticket, I will keep an eye on that. :-)

Do we need a seperate ticket for the VTT whitelisting?

BV52's picture

Hi pheraph,

You're welcome.

Don't worry about it, we are already working on adding it on the list.

Hi pheraph,

It has been found that this issue is a bug within Firefox.  A new ticket has been created and you can follow it here.

Yes, I reported the bug myself, but it‘s good to link it here anyway. :-)

Hi. Do you have to actually add a captions file to your YouTube video for the CC button to appear when that YouTube video is used as a part of an interactive video or will the captions that are automatically created by YouTube work too?

I have a video on YouTube that I have pulled into an interactive video object. The caption button is visble on the player when viewing the video directly on YouTube but not when viewing the video as a part of the interactive video on my site.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've tried multiple browsers but there is still no CC button on my video inside the object.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon!

You're not doing anything wrong. YouTube's API unfortunately does not pass the auto-created captions to external players, that's why we cannot offer them.

Best,
Oliver

Thanks for replying Oliver.

So, just to confirm, if I want the captions to come through to the video when embedded in an intercative video I'd have to actually upload a captions file to the video on YouTube?

Thanks

Simon

otacke's picture

Hi Simon!

Yes, we can only process captions that have been manually added. But you can as well create captions directly from the auto-generated captions within YouTube instead of uploading them. Still, it's unfortunate for those who use others' videos and cannot add the captions themselves.

Best,
Oliver
