Game Map Use Cases

Pahkis's picture

The Game Map is a great tool.

But I wonder, could it be expanded to be used as a Course or programme roadmap to explore course modules, lesson units and courses?

This would provide a potential topographical study map, potentially done with not only maps, but also other graphical illustrators that add learning content into the map itself.

In theory, if it can be integrated/linked to an LMS, it could be used as part of the course and module unlocking system, once previous courses have been completed or tests passed - could this be possible?

Hi Chris!

The idea of H5P is to create single content that can be included in a large variety of learning management systems, not to replace their course structure and features. So it's very unlikely that GameMap is going to be turned into a tool to build a complete course in. There is the idea of allowing to have multiple maps and “teleport” stages to jump from one to the other – that’s what the tubes on the map of Super Mario World would be for. Implementing that would requires some decent amount of work though and will most likely not happen in the near future without someone funding it (cmp. https://www.olivertacke.de/labs/2024/01/17/new-features-for-gamemap/).

I don't see, however, why it should not possible today to use it as some form of an "Advance Organizer" that leads through a course. Within a stage, you can link to any other web page, be it a course lesson or whatever.

Also, you can use GameMap as a "blocker" for other parts of your course in moodle, for instance. Both available H5P integrations for moodle support moodle's completion tracking feature that can be used to make content accessible dynamically if certain requirements that you set are fulfilled.

Best,
Oliver
