Interactive video

Sincere apologies if this has already been answered but I am somewhat of a newbie to H5P...

Has the Interactive video activity been removed from the list of activities I can create in my .org account?

It appears in most of the online tutorials but I can't see it in the list.

I ask because I work for an educational organisation that uses Panopto and I'm really interested to see what can be done with it.

Thanks in advance!

Content types:

Hi Paul,

To provide a best possible experience for new users and to ensure that people use H5P.org only for trying out H5P (we've had more traffic than our server can handle lately, ref also the warnings when you create content, embed content and view the content) we are experimenting with which content types should be available here.

Check the getting started page for information on how you can use all the content types and use H5P for real. We unfortunately are not able to provide free hosting, only free software :) Hopefully you'll consider supporting the H5P Core Team by using H5P.com.

Hi BV52,

There's a few points I'd like to make but first, please accept my sincere thanks for taking the time to reply to my post last week. I do appreciate it.

I don't really understand how providing the "best possible experience for new users" involves removing the Interactive video content type from the free creator tool in h5p.org. I understand that H5P can't possibly manage all the different user tutorials out there falsely claiming it is avialbale at H5P.org because those things are out of your control. However, at least consider removing it from the home page at h5p.org where the animation clearly shows it being used, therefore promotes it and implies it is available there. It's highly misleading.

The second point I'd like to make is that if it's not ideal for you to host everyone's "try out" content with the free creator tool, why keep encouraging them to do so? Why not only allow downloading of the package created and encourage users to use their own hosting/LMS?

Finally, when I read that H5P is a "free and open-source content collaboration framework", I guess I  don't understand that definition. After all, Firefox is a "free and open-source web browser", which allows us to use the whole product for free. Pushing people towards paying for the LTI seems to contradict the definition of H5P. So I don't really agree it's "free software" as you put it... would it be more correct to say H5P is "try before you buy" software?
Have they considered a one-off charge for a standalone creator tool that would allow access to all content types and allow download for self-deployment - without any LTI and LMS intergrations?

Hi Paul,

I think it's best to explain the rationale behind limiting the content types with a trip down memory lane :-)

H5P.org was invisioned to be a website to try out the basic functionality of H5P and to test new updates/bug fixes. Having said this the website does not have much in terms of resources. However there are users that used the site to host 'real' contents which caused the site to slow down and actually stopped working several times. This prompted the core to limit the content types created in H5P.org to encourage users to either host their own contents or sign up for H5P.com.

H5P does not falsely claim that all content types can be created in H5P.org. It is to try out the basics and then provides a way to use all the content types. Trying out H5P in H5P.org also helps the H5P core team by having an additional level of testing before releasing the updates into the plugins.

Comparing H5P to Firefox I think is a bit unfair. Firefox is a browser and once downloaded resides in someone's computer, while H5P is a learning tool that needs the internet and somewhere to host it to be shared to students/users. The use of H5Ps content types is absolutely free however hosting is not. The plugin can be downloaded can for free with the user having full control over the software. Open source on the other hand is a category of softwares which means anyone can make changes to it without prior notice to the original developers.

I hope this clear things up and if you have any clarifications feel free to post your comment.

Hi all!

I read this

Have they considered a one-off charge for a standalone creator tool that would allow access to all content types and allow download for self-deployment - without any LTI and LMS intergrations?

and would like to amend BV's answer. I assume "they" is supposed to be the H5P core team.

As BV already mentioned, you can install H5P on your own server completely for free and you there can use all content types. Don't see why one should create yet another system around H5P if you can integrate it into other platforms that are already established and widely used and allows to save lots of time by not re-inventing the wheel.

Then, if you take a look at the roadmap, you'll be able to find the answer to your question. There are plans for local apps. But, I am not sure if the H5P core team needs to create those at all thanks to it being open source software. There already is a solution called Lumi that can currently be used in Windows, MacOS and Linux to create and view H5P content - and it's also open source software and free.

Hope that helps. Wasn't entirely sure what this "It's not really free" claim is based on given that you can download H5P and put on your server for free, and I don't see a problem with an optional solution where you pay for hosting and some exclusive premium features. After all, someone has to pay for the development and there's no multi-million foundation in the background like for Firefox.

Best,

Oliver

Hi everyone,
same problem here, I was really surprised that my absolute all time favorite activity of the interactive video was removed. Has it completely been removed or is there any possibility to still create such videos without editing or changing my account?
Thanks in advance!

Hi lbitter,

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

The content types that are available in H5P.org changes from time to time. This is to help test updates and bug fixes before updates to the plugins (Moodle, Drupal and Wordpress) as well as H5P.com is released. H5P.org was never meant to host "real" contents.
